Focus on the Family Statement
Focus on the Family commends the United Nations Security Council
August 15, 2007
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Focus on the Family commends the United Nations Security Council for reaching a unanimous agreement on Resolution 1769, which establishes a peacekeeping force to counter the “on-going attacks on the civilian population and humanitarian workers and continued and widespread sexual violence” in Darfur, Sudan. The United States has officially called the violence in Sudan genocide.
Since 2003, native African families in the Darfur region have endured military attacks and systematic rapes by militias sanctioned by the Sudanese government. These tactics, used to achieve religious and ethnic cleansing, have resulted in the killing of more than 200,000 people and the displacement of an additional 2 million since 2003.
